Democrat Patrick Timmins Announces Candidacy for Manhattan District Attorney
Incumbent DA Alvin Bragg faces primary challenge
New York, NY – Democrat and lifelong New Yorker Patrick Timmins today announced his candidacy for Manhattan District Attorney, seeking to unseat incumbent District Attorney Alvin Bragg.
Timmins was born in Washington Heights, raised in the Bronx, and has lived in Manhattan his entire adult life. He and his wife have raised three children in the Morningside Heights/West Harlem section of Manhattan.
Timmins is a former Assistant District Attorney. He is also an Adjunct Professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, teaching at John Jay for over 20 years.
Timmins is running on the issue of public safety both above ground and below ground in the subways. He is critical of DA Bragg’s “Day One Memo” and efforts to seek alternatives to prosecution.
Timmins believes that with crime surging below ground in the subways, as well as above ground, Manhattan needs a common sense, pragmatic Democratic leader who is devoted to tackling the issues that affect every day New Yorkers’ sense of safety and security in their neighborhoods and on the subway.
“Reducing enforcement and punishment of crime does not make Manhattan safe,” said Timmins. “Bragg’s efforts to do so have backfired and have ended up harming New Yorkers. Bragg’s Day One Memo about what he was NOT going to do as a prosecutor has brought about increased crime and a perception of chaos in the subway and on our streets.” Timmins would move to reverse Bragg’s policies such as not prosecuting shoplifting, resisting arrest, and fare evasion. Timmins would work closely with the Police Commissioner and NYPD to restore the relationship with the District Attorney’s office and would urge the deployment of more police officers to ride the subway cars throughout Manhattan.
Timmins will also focus on expungement of crimes for people who have paid their debt to society. He believes in restoring the right to vote and removing obstacles to job opportunities.
In addition to practicing civil litigation law representing retired union members who have been diagnosed with cancer due to asbestos exposure, Timmins spent a decade working for former Democratic Assemblyman John Dearie both in his law practice and in local politics.
“Having known Patrick for more than thirty years, I can see no one better suited to lead the Manhattan District Attorney’s office and keep Manhattanites safe,” said former Assemblyman Dearie.
